The city Hlinsko lies on the basin of the Chrudimka River. It sits at the foot of the Czech-Moravian Highlands, on the boundary of two protected landscapes of the Žďárský Highland and Iron Mountain regions. Hlinsko is the centre of the region in terms of social life, education, industry, business and services. HistoryA potter settlement was established in the 11th century on the way from Bohemia to Moravia. This is where the name of today’s city comes from, which was derived from the word “hlina” (soil). The first historical document of Hlinsko dates back to the 1st half of the 14th century. Since then it has belonged to the Rychmburk estate, which belonged to Tasovi of Rychmburk, later on to the Vartenberks and then to e.g. Arnošt Flašk of Pardubice. In 1718 the Kinskys bought the Rychmburk estate. In 1770 to 1771, famine and the plague raged in Hlinsko. In 1834 Hlinsko became a city independent of authorities. In 1871, the construction of the railway was completed and operation began on the route between Pardubice and Havlíčkuv Brod. Following the end of World War II, the city began to develop its economic sphere. The most significant monumentsThe oldest Hlinsko building is the fortress, of which the first written record dates back to 1413. Hlinsko includes the historical quarter Betlém. There are timbered buildings of minor town craftsmen here, which were built in the middle of the 18th century. |
Another significant building is the Baroque Town Hall on Poděbrad Square and the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the local museum visitors can find an exhibition on the history of Hlinecko, the memorial hall of the Adamek family, visitors can learn about the history of the education system, handicrafts and see samples of period costumes and fashion accessories. LegendYears and years ago, a potter once lived in one of the timbered cottages in Betlem, Hlinsko. His name was Matěj Drtina. His eldest descendent was his son Jakub, who one day left and wandered about the world. Jakub began do prosper. Time flew and soon he became homesick and decided to return to his hometown Hlinkso with the money he had earned. With time, people began to envy him. Jakub was very disappointed and thought that by getting rid of his money he would rid people of their envy. Therefore, one day he made a huge pot and put all of his savings into it. In the evening he went to bury it in an unknown place. However, he never returned the next day and nobody ever saw him since in Hlinkso. Sources used: http://cs.wikipedia.org, http://www.hlinsko.cz |
